Mikel S. Anthony, 93, of Woodbury died Friday, November 20, 2009 at Middlebury Convalescent Home. She was the widow of William H. Anthony, Lt. Col. USA (Ret).
She was born on January 30, 1916 in New York City, the daughter of Ernst and Grace Geyer. Orphaned at a very early age, she was adopted and raised by Howard and Margaret Stitt of Summit, NJ, where she grew up. She was a graduate of Kent Place School and attended Smith College.
In the years prior to WWII, she worked in the advertising and fashion photography industry in New York City. After the war, she maintained an active life as an army wife until her husband's retirement in 1967. During that time she attended Eliot Parsons School of Early Childhood Education at Tufts University and worked for many years as a kindergarten teacher. In 1967, she and her husband retired to Woodbury where in 1971, she and her friend, May Louise Iszard, opened and operated The Purple Web, a yarn and needlepoint arts shop in Middle Quarter Mall. Within a few years, she became the sole proprietor and operated the shop for many years.
She is survived by her son, William H. Anthony and his wife, Joan, of Woodbury, her daughter, Kathryn Sheikh and her husband Amjid, of Woodbury and five grandchildren, Matthew Anthony of Gardner, MA, Kath Anthony of Ridgefield, Jared Sheikh of Woodbury, Nickolas Sheikh of Woodbury and Tyler Sheikh of Woodbury. She was predeceased by her sister Katherine Spotts.
