Mary Josephine Bynack, 96, of Woodbury, passed away on June 3, 2025. Born in Waterbury on March 20, 1929, the daughter of William and Bridget Richards. She was the wife of the late Joseph Bynack.

Mary met Joe, her brother's friend, after he returned from the Army in 1948. They married around 1950 at the North Congregational Church in Woodbury. The happy couple celebrated by taking a trip to Maine and then Niagara Falls. The two had no children.

Mary's favorite food was lobster and her favorite place to get a meal was at the Charcoal Chef. She was employed by the regional school district 14 as a school lunch lady at Mitchell School. A job she held for over 50 years. Mary always spoke fondly of seeing the little kids every day when they would look into the cafeteria smiling to see what was on the menu. She was the smiling face on the lunch line for generations of Woodburians.

Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Mary was considered a friend. In her later years she could be found working on her teddy bear collection or sitting in her rocking chair on the porch at home, which Joe had built for her.

Mary passed peacefully on a beautiful day, Tuesday June 3rd in the evening hours. The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Lutheran Home in Southbury, the hospice team from Hartford hospital and Christina and Nicole at Connecticut home care program. Sarah and Heather at Woodbury social services for advice and advocacy for our dear friend.

In conclusion, may we all find solace in knowing there was a long line of friends waiting to hold the doors to heaven so she could finally embrace her husband Joey, which she so desired.

A graveside service will be held Friday June 6, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at New North Cemetery, 87 Washington Ave. Woodbury, CT.
