Obituary

Margaret (Peggy) Werner Nye died peacefully at home on November 5, 2014, after a long illness. Peggy was born in Cooperstown, NY, to Louanna (Bowen) and J. William Werner on July 23, 1922. She grew up in Hudson Falls, NY, alongside her two brothers, William Werner and Scott Werner. Peggy received her Associates degree from her beloved Green Mountain College, and served for many years on the Green Mountain Alumni Board. She received her Bachelor degree from University of Virginia where she met her husband, Frank H. Nye, Jr. They were married in July, 1944; and after WWII, settled first in Bedford Village, NY, and then in Ridgefield, CT, where they lived for almost 40 years. She and Frank moved to Heritage Village, in Southbury, CT, in 1993. Peggy is remembered by countless families as the librarian at Barlow Mountain Elementary School and then Farmingville Elementary School, both in Ridgefield. After retiring from her long teaching career, Peggy volunteered at Danbury Hospital; and was known as 'Grandma Nye' to Mrs. Banville's class at Gainfield Elementary School where she visited regularly to read to the children. Peggy was a woman of deep faith, and volunteered her time and loving care to Jesse Lee United Methodist Church in Ridgefield, and to UCC Southbury. Peggy is survived by her husband of 70 years, Frank Nye; by three daughters, Susie Allen of Boxborough, MA, Julie Pope, of Southbury, CT, and Jennifer Walsh, of Oakland, CA; by 10 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. Her son, Scott H. Nye, died in 1972.
