Obituary

Manfred Maier, 88, of Southbury, CT passed away peacefully in Southbury, CT on May 21, 2025. Manfred was born in Ulm, Germany in 1936 to Josef and Rosa Maier.

He grew up with little, and sometimes shared stories about post-war Germany. One of his favorites was how he and his friends played soccer (fussball) with pig's bladder as the ball and newspapers as shin guards since supplies were scarce. Despite only completing school up to the 7th grade, Manfred did not let that hold him back. He stubbornly fought for an apprenticeship as a Tool and Die maker in Ulm and was finally granted a position by a benefactor despite not qualifying due to his social and financial circumstances. A few years later, he went to work in Zurich, Switzerland where he met the love of his life, Lydia. When her US immigration visa application was approved, he followed her to Canada, and they were married on December 31, 1960. They continued their journey to New York and started their new life with less than $50 in their bank account.

Manfred worked days at Goldsmith Tool and Die and spent countless hours at night building up his own business in his basement. When he had enough customers, he launched his own company, Reiam Co. Inc. in Pearl River, NY.; As he grew his business with his son Gerhard, they moved to a larger facility in Blauvelt, NY. He was always justifiably proud of this accomplishment. Manfred was also the owner of three patents and two other businesses which he started to sell and distribute these patented products.

Manfred's favorite role was that of a grandparent. He treasured time with his grandkids and loved being their "Opa." They hope to follow his example by carving out their own unique path with integrity while taking every moment and making the best of it.

Manfred was a proud member of the German American Club of Rockland County and served as its President for over 20 years. Everyone who knew Manfred knew how he lived life to the fullest. He loved having a good time. He would never say no to a drink, a party or just getting together with friends. He also had a sense of adventure and enjoyed camping, hiking, and scuba diving. He loved traveling and was constantly planning his next trip.

Manfred will always be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and willingness to help anyone in need. Manfred was preceded in death by his son, Gerhard and his sister Helga. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lydia, his daughter Monica, and his grandchildren Christina, Michael, and Matthew.
