Obituary


Mrs. Lorraine (Smith) Nurnberger, 93, of Woodbury, passed away after a long illness on February 1, 2012 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late William G. Nurnberger. Mrs. Nurnberger was born on November 25, 1918 in the Bronx, New York, the daughter of the late Russell B. and Edna L. Smith. She is a descendant of Colonel William Tangier Smith, one of the original land-owner families of Long Island. She spent her school years in Larchmont, graduating from Mamaroneck High School. She worked for the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency in the cost accounting department and during World War II she was a nurses aide at Columbus Hospital in New York. Lorraine was a long-time resident of Bethlehem where she was a member of the First Church of Bethlehem, United Church of Christ for more than 50 years and a member of the church choir for more than 30 years. She was also a member of the Waterbury Choral for 25 years. She was an artist, exhibiting and competing in area art shows. She continued to paint landscapes and still life pictures well into her 80's. She was employed by Regional School District 14 for 17 years. After her retirement, she and her husband William moved to North Carolina, returning to Connecticut in 2000. Since 2006, Lorraine lived at the Spruce Bank Farm senior housing complex in Woodbury where she enjoyed time with her many neighbors and friends. Lorraine is survived by her four children, Gary Nurnberger and his wife Pat of Woodbury, David Nurnberger and his wife Nancy of Woodbury, Sarah Sebastian and her husband Clifton of Southbury and Judy Nurnberger Watts of East Providence, Rhode Island. She also leaves 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson and a niece, Carol Smith White of Marietta, Georgia.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Lorraine's name be made to the First Church of Bethlehem, or to Simply Smiles, Inc., 1771 Post Road East, Westport, CT 06880.

Services: A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2: 00 p.m. at the First Church of Bethlehem, Main St. South, Bethlehem.
