Obituary

Loretta (Aquilar) (Winters) Adams, 93, of Woodbury, passed away Wednesday October 22, 2008, at the Brandywine Assisted Living Community in Litchfield. She was the widow of the late E. Harry (Stretch) Adams. Loretta was born July 19, 1915, in Mohawk, N.Y., daughter of the late William and Frances (Santoro) Aquilar. She retired from Timex Corporation in Middlebury. She and Stretch were the former owners of On the Dot Cleaners and Robinwood Cleaners in Waterbury and Bantam Cleaners in Bantam. She was a communicant of St. Teresa's Catholic Church of Woodbury and a past member of The Lady's Guild. Loretta was a talented athlete, a successful amateur investor in the stock market and a loving mother and grandmother. A gifted basketball player, she played for the Mohawk High School girl's team and relished backyard games of HORSE with her grandsons. Loretta was occasionally known to throw a game, allowing her grandsons to win so they would not be discouraged. While in her 70's, she entered a basketball competition on a cruise ship. She won the women's division Gold Medal even though competing against much younger women by making eight of the 10 required shots. Never one to boast, she confided to her son "six of the eight were swishes." Loretta's greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, especially if she was cooking for them. She enjoyed her get-togethers with the "Timex Gang," her fellow office workers from her days at Timex, and the company and friendship of the ladies who attended daily mass together at St. Teresa and their breakfast gatherings afterwards. She loved vacationing on the Rhode Island shore and was happiest sitting in her rocking chair watching the boats and birds traverse Narragansett Bay. Loretta was an avid follower of and investor in the stock market. She did extensive, personal research on the companies she bought stock in and she enjoyed attending her stock club meetings. She found it difficult to hide her excitement when one of her stocks split or performed well. She leaves a son, Edward Winters and his wife, Linda, of Woodbury, a daughter, Marjorie Feest and her husband Robert of Fountain Hills, AZ.; her step-mother, Isabelle Aquilar of Watertown, two sisters, Mae Trethowan of Miami, FL, and Gloria Faraci and her husband Bill of Watertown, a brother, Daniel of Woodbury and his wife Marianne, four grandsons, Robert Feest of Chicago, Il., Edward Winters III of San Diego, Ca., Brendon Winters and Bradley Winters of Woodbury, two granddaughters, Cheryl Feest-Glass of Fountain Hills, Az. and Cynthia Thompson of Garden City, N.Y. and her husband David Osborne, four great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Winters; a son, Donald Adams, and a brother, William Aquilar. The family wishes to thank the wonderful caring staff at Brandywine Assisted Living Community for all the loving care, kindness and compassion provided during Loretta's four years there, especially the staff on the Reflections wing. The family also thanks the Visiting Nurse Services staff and its Hospice program staff.
