IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lore
Jarmul
August 22, 1924 – July 23, 2010
SOUTHBURY - Lore Jarmul, 85, passed away peacefully at The Watermark at East Hill on Friday, July 23. Beloved by her family, for whom she was the guiding spirit, she was widely admired in Southbury as a reporter and community leader.
Born Ilselore Prausnitz to a German-Jewish family in Berlin on August 22, 1924, her parents foresaw the coming disaster and moved to Queens, New York in 1937. Lore learned English and emerged as a stellar student, excelling at Queens College before earning advanced degrees at Brown University and CW Post.
In 1947, she married the love of her life, the late Seymour Jarmul, with whom she raised a family on Long Island. She was a devoted mother and community volunteer. After her children grew up, she counseled students for many years at Queensborough Community College. She traveled to Nepal, Haiti, Israel and other countries; and enjoyed passions ranging from politics to gardening.
Lore's eagerness to serve blossomed after she moved to Heritage Village. She reported for the Heritage Villager well into her 80s, writing with notable accuracy, clarity and fairness. She also wrote a definitive history of the community. She was president of the local ambulance association and served in leadership roles with Temple B'nai Israel, Planned Parenthood, the League of Women Voters and other organizations. She had countless friends at the Watermark and in Heritage Village, always making time to play bridge, share meals and help others.
Her greatest love was her family, who deeply mourn her passing. She is survived by daughter Ruth and her husband Irv, of New York City; son David and his wife Champa, of Durham, NC; daughter Nancy and her husband Joel of Old Greenwich, CT; grandchildren Rebecca and her husband Adam, Paul and his wife Stephanie, Rachel, Jonathan, Danielle, Sarah and Juliana; great-grandchildren Paula, Maya and Simon; brother John Prausnitz and his wife Susie and family; brother- and sister-in law Bernie and Florence Ross and family; lifelong friends Charlotte and Marv Shapiro and Rhoda Ashley; and others.
