Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lemuel Golden Johnson Jr., who departed this life peacefully on May 20, 2026. Born on September 30, 1945, in Washington D.C., to the late Lemuel Sr. and Marion Gayle Johnson. Lemuel embraced life with an adventurous spirit and a profound dedication to family and community. He leaves behind a legacy enriched by love, wisdom, and a deep connection to the outdoors.

Those he leaves to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 41 years, Shirley Johnson, children, Richard Markey and his wife Donna, Michael C. Markey, and Jennifer Peterson and her husband John. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, his siblings, Bonnie Kraut and her husband James of Virginia, and Andrew Johnson and his wife Mary of Maryland, along with two nieces and one nephew. Lemuel was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Melissa Krajeski.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Lemuel honed his skills in Cartography and Photogrammetry through his training with the Army Map Services. In 1984, he founded Golden Aerial Surveys in Southbury and established himself as a respected figure in Mapping and Land Surveying Industry, actively involved with the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing as a Certified Photogrammetrist, the Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors, and the New York Association of Professional Land Surveyors. Lem’s commitment to giving back to the community was displayed through 29 years of service as the chairman of the Southbury Zoning Board of Appeals. A devoted member of the Free Masons, he held the esteemed position of Deputy Grand Master of Connecticut, embodying the principles of brotherhood and service. Lem was an avid fly fisher, woodworker, and outdoorsman, often found hiking, mountain climbing, and scuba diving. He artfully crafted furniture for each of his children, treasures that hold deep sentimental value and will be cherished for generations.

Funeral services will be held at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, located at 235 Main St. N., Southbury, CT 06488, on Friday, May 29, 2026. Family and friends will gather from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM to celebrate Lemuel's life and legacy. A special service conducted by his fellow Masons will take place at 3:45 PM, honoring his commitment to the Masonic community and the values he lived by.

In a world that often moves too fast, Lemuel's life was a testament to the importance of slowing down, enjoying nature, and embracing family. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
