IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lawrence J.
Slater Jr.
January 15, 1954 – March 13, 2025
Lawrence James Slater Jr., 71, of Oxford, CT, passed away after a brief illness on March 13, 2025. He is survived by the love of his life, Maureen (Downs) Slater, to whom he was married for almost 43 years. He is also survived by his son Lawrence J. Slater III, Lawrence's wife Erica, his daughter Rachel Slater, and his son Joseph J. Slater from his first marriage. In addition, he is survived by his sister Linda Glover, his brothers Michael and Neil, Michael's wife Monica, and Neil's wife Elena. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Darlene Slater-Cote.
Larry was born on January 15, 1954, in Milford CT to the late Colleen (Rush) Slater and Lawrence J. Slater Sr. Larry lived for a short time in Branford, CT, and spent most of his childhood in West Haven, CT, where he graduated from West Haven High School. He received an associate's degree from Norwalk Technical College and a bachelor's degree from Sacred Heart University. He received his MBA from the University of New Haven. For most of his 30-plus year career, Larry was an IT Director at companies including Compudata, Quilltronics, Tetley Tea, and Cendant, before retiring from APT Metrics in 2019.
Throughout his life he was an avid athlete. Larry enjoyed basketball, softball, and bowling in his younger years and took up pickleball after he retired, but his lifelong favorite was golf. He played weekly prior to his retirement and then played as often as possible, sometimes up to five days a week. He spent many happy days playing golf with his buddies and even managed to achieve the elusive hole-in-one. He was known as a fierce pickleball competitor with a mean spin serve.
Larry enjoyed watching the Vikings play and remained a faithful fan despite their long history of woe. He was also a fan of the New York Yankees and the Boston Celtics. He appreciated good wine, good food, and good company. He was known for his quick wit and good sense of humor, never missing an opportunity to engage others in laughter. He was known amongst friends and family for his famous clam chowder and spicy chili. Larry traveled extensively with Maureen and his children to locations all around the globe. One of his favorite trips was an excursion through Ireland with his family, where he experienced a variety of ancient and interesting Irish pubs. He also thoroughly enjoyed an adventure to Italy with his wife, where they particularly appreciated the food and culture of Florence.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
