Dr. Khalil M. Kharma of Woodbury, CT passed away on August 8, 2011. He was the husband of Alexandria J. (Palmer) Kharma.
Born August 15, 1936 in Beirut, Lebanon he was the son of the late Mustapha and Fahima (Beyhum) Kharma.
Dr. Kharma received his B.S. in Biology and M.D. from the American University of Beirut, where he also interned. He came to the United States to serve his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He was a Ford Foundation Research Fellow in Reproductive Biology at UCLA and the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. After returning to Lebanon to work as an Assistant Professor at A. U. B., he came back to the U. S. to Bryn Mawr, PA and then Waterbury, CT, where he was in private practice for 29 years before retiring in 2002. During this time, he received academic appointments as Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Medicine.
He was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the New Haven Medical Society, Connecticut Medical Society, and Connecticut Society of American Board Obstetrics & Gynecologists.
He enjoyed fine art, classical music, and opera as well as following soccer, cycling, and Formula 1 car racing. He took great pleasure in spending time in lively debate and joyous socializing with friends. Dr. Kharma will be cherished for his kind heart and gracious manner.
He is survived by his wife "Jean" and three children, Philip of Killingworth, CT, Leslie of Los Angeles, CA, and Kenneth of Pasadena, CA. He is also survived by his brother, Ziad and his wife Alia, of Beirut, Lebanon and their two children, Nermine and Salma.
