Obituary


Joseph J. McNamara, 85, of Southbury, husband of Dorothy (O'Brien) McNamara, died Monday, May 19, 2008. Mr. McNamara was born March 1, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Timothy and Katherine (McQuade) McNamara. He lived in Brooklyn until 1954 and then moved to Massapequa and subsequently Manhasset, Long Island, where he resided for 40 years. During WW II, Mr. McNamara served three years in the Navy, principally as a radio operator on a destroyer where he intercepted German U-Boat code. He worked for Burlington Industries for 28 years where he was sales vice-president of the Export and Galey-Lord Divisions. He later worked for 12 years for Crompton Co., NY, where he was sales vice-president, before retiring in 1985. In 1992, Mr. McNamara moved to Heritage Village where he was active in village affairs and was his condo trustee for 5 years. In addition, he was a patient's representative at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury for several years. Besides his wife of 59 years of marriage, he is survived by 3 sons, Kevin and his wife Margaret, Dennis and his wife Alayne and Timothy; 4 daughters, Jean and Mary McNamara, Maureen McNamara and her husband Colin McBride, Patricia Ahern and her husband Timothy; 6 grandchildren.

Cemetery: Calverton National Cemetery

Location: Munson-Lovetere Southbury

Funeral: Sacred Heart Church

Services: Funeral mass will be held Thursday, May 22 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St. South, Southbury. Burial will be in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.

Visitation: Calling hours in the daily chapel at Sacred Heart Church will be on Wednesday, May 21, from 4 to 7 p.m.
