Obituary

Jonathan Alger Finucane, 78, of Southbury, CT passed away on December 12, 2022 at River Glen Health Care Center after a year-long battle with a rare form of bile duct cancer.

Jonathan, lovingly nicknamed "Jock", was born on March 23, 1944 in Copiague, NY to Betty Rae Alger Finucane and CAPT Robert Lawrence Finucane, USNR (Ret.). He grew up with his younger brother Robert Alan and sisters Nancy Robin (Rowan) and Judith Ellen (Umstead) in South Salem, NY and attended John Jay High School where he lived up to his nickname playing multiple sports, excelling on the baseball team. He went on to attend Hastings College in Nebraska and spent four years in the United States Air Force which enhanced his love for aviation. He started his career as an air traffic controller in Miami, FL where he met his first wife, Mary Anne Kutyla (Bishop) and later moved to Simsbury, CT after their two daughters, Anne Whitney and Nancy Lynn were born. They divorced in 1985, and years later Jon met his second wife Caren Foisie while working at Brainard Airport in Hartford, CT. The two had a son, Matthew Robert.

Jon is predeceased by his parents and brother, and leaves behind his daughter, Whitney Shea and son-in-law Col Shannon Shea, USMC, of Tucson, AZ, daughter Lynn Storey and son-in-law Rick Storey of Southbury, CT, son Matt Finucane, and three grandchildren who he adored, Dakota Storey and Emma and Oliver Shea.

After retiring from a long career as an air traffic controller and commercial pilot, Jon was able to spend more time doing the things he truly enjoyed - observing nature and "catchin' some rays" while walking the boardwalk at White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield, camping in the Adirondacks, and creating his beautiful artwork. Jock was an incredibly talented artist who enjoyed utilizing oils, acrylics and most notably watercolors. His doodles and drawings were incredibly remarkable, unique, and sometimes a bit wacky.

Those who knew and loved Jocko will always remember his silly ways and one-of-a-kind sense of humor. He had a talent for making up funny words and inventing unique nicknames for practically everyone he met and once he did, the name stuck! Jon was an avid reader and wordsmith with a never-ending thirst for knowledge, having an impressive ability to recollect details, numbers and dates. He enjoyed playing Scrabble, Words with Friends, picking his sports scores and lottery numbers, playing trivia, watching Jeopardy, nature shows, golf and rooting for his beloved teams: the NY Mets, Miami Dolphins and UConn Girls Basketball.

While he was known for being the life of the party, he was also a bit of a "lone wolf" and enjoyed his quiet time listening to classical music (Bach, Beethoven and Handel were among his favorites) at a volume level so low that we all wondered how he was even able to hear it!

He fought his cancer like a rock star, undergoing surgery to remove the tumor in January 2022 and going through four cycles of chemo this past spring which allowed loved ones to enjoy many more months with him, until receiving the dreaded news that the cancer had returned, metastasized to his liver and was now Stage 4 Cholangiocarcinoma.

Jon's memory will live on through his kids, grandkids and all who knew and loved him.

No services will be held until the spring/summer when family and friends will gather for a celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of the following charities:
