Obituary

John Caldwell Soper born October 15, 1946, the son of the late Kenneth L. and Sylvia Caldwell Soper, died June 18, 2011 at his home. John is survived by his brothers Henry of Camarillo, California, and Tom, of Palmer, Alaska. He is also survived by his niece, Michelle Friedline, and his nephew, Michael Soper, and their families. Academically exceedingly agile, he graduated from The Rectory School, The Gunnery School, and Yale University. Years later he earned an accounting baccalaureate from Western Connecticut College. His early summers were spent guiding adolescent boys on canoe trips through the bush of Northern Quebec. During the Vietnam conflict he served in the U.S. Navy, receiving the American Spirit Honor Medal, given for initiative, loyalty, and high example to comrades in arms. After working in Connecticut for a few years after college, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he played ice hockey. He also worked as an accountant, but just to give himself the freedom to play hockey. After eleven years there he returned to Connecticut, to his beloved Town of Washington, working as an accountant/auditor. John was also an avid and life-long New York Yankee and Giants fan. An ardent writer, he wrote several papers of varying sizes on a variety of topics. The past twelve years' summers he focused on returning to the Quebec bush he and his brothers loved so much, initially to take trips on the water to the old canoe routes he knew so well, and then later visiting old destinations with magical names - Chibougamau, Waswanipi, Mistassini, Senneterre and Kapitachouane - by car. He lived life his way, and to the fullest. He departs with no regrets.
