IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Campbell
''Jack'' White
March 27, 1932 – September 13, 2013
Mr. John Campbell "Jack" White, 81, of Southbury died Friday September 13, 2013 at Waterbury Hospital after a long illness. Best friend, partner, and husband of Carol (Hoffman) White for 57 years, proud and devoted father of Mary, Libby, John and Kregg, initially skeptical then wholly committed father-in-law to Lawrence Tabas and Heidi (White) and Annie (White), and slightly overwhelmed but happy grandfather to Kyle, Sam, Casey, Lizz, Julia, Helen, Katie, Rebecca, Anna, Keith, Campbell, and Trevor. He is also survived by his sister, Sara Ifft, his niece Martha Ruby and nephew Bill Ifft, and many cousins and friends spread across the United States.
Jack was born and raised in the silver mining town of Wallace, Idaho, the son of John C. White, Sr. and Esther Jean Swift White. He played "iron man" football for tiny Wallace high school; one of his fondest memories was beating the much larger towns' teams from Kellogg and Coeur d'Alene for a championship. Jack went to Washington State University, became a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and majored in economics. The army then decided it needed Jack as part of its motor pool division in Germany, although as part of the office staff he never drove a car. He returned to Washington State to meet and marry Carol, along with their four children and various pets, lived in a number of California cities, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Connecticut, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Florida (and no, he was not in the military anymore). Jack also became active in community theater and played a variety of parts, including Teddy in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," the slightly tipsy lawyer in "Born Yesterday," and characters for Shakespeare in the Park. He also enjoyed fishing without catching anything, hunting with his favorite dog, "Patience," without hitting anything, and watching college football and rooting for his beloved Washington State Cougars and San Francisco 49ers. Jack, a funny, smart, slightly imperfect idealist loved, most of all, laughing, playing with, and just being with his family.
