Obituary


SOUTHBURY- Mr. John "Jay" J. McAvoy, also known as "Papa Bull" McAvoy, of 38A Heritage Village, died Saturday May 22, 2010 at River Glen Health Care Center. He was the husband of Angelina "Angie" D. (Cafaro) McAvoy.

Mr. McAvoy was born February 5, 1935 in Staten Island, NY, son of the late John W. and Harriet (Watson) McAvoy. He graduated from New Dorp High School in Staten Island. He was a retired salesman, having been employed by Metropolitan Insurance Company for 30 years in New Milford and Danbury. He also worked at Hayes Chevrolet Buick in New Milford for 10 years.

Mr. McAvoy was a Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean War, having been active with the Marine Corps League in Danbury as Commandant. He was also active in the Danbury Association of Life Underwriters, where he served as president and served the town of New Milford in several capacities. He was a justice of the peace.

Mr. McAvoy helped implement the Pop Warner football, New Milford Bulls and was known as "Papa Bull" . He also coached football, baseball and basketball at the community center of New Milford. Presently, he was President of Condo #1 in Heritage Village and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Shaun M. McAvoy of Kent, CT, Kevin P. McAvoy of Sherman, CT, Darren J. McAvoy of Providence, UT and Christopher J. McAvoy of Hailey, Idaho and six grandchildren:
Brendhan, Shannon, Caitlin, Liam, Teagan and Devon.


He was predeceased by two sisters, June Mitchell and Carol Naves.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Location: Munson-Lovetere Southbury

Funeral: Sacred Heart Church

Services: Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 26th at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St. South.

Visitation: Friends may call the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main St. North on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
