Obituary


SOUTHBURY -- John W. Carlson, 93, died August 9, 2006 at River Glen Health Care Center. He and his wife, Martha Swain Carlson, who survives him, moved to Heritage Village in 1997 after living in Bethlehem for 26 years.
John Carlson was born on February 26, 1913, in Keokuk, Iowa, son of Rev. A.W. Carlson and Clara (Anderson) Carlson. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He and his wife lived in Manhattan and Centerport, New York, before moving to Bethlehem in 1971.
With his wife as partner, he published Job/Scope, a national newspaper for key field supervisors in mechanical contracting firms, for 17 years before retiring in 1985. Today, Job/Scope continues to be published by an industry group. He had also been an editor for Radio Guide and editor-in-chief of Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Business magazine.
He was a member of the First Church of Bethlehem, U.C.C., for more than 30 years, serving several terms as deacon. He also served two terms on the board of directors of North Purchase, Bethlehem's elderly housing facility. He was advancement chairman of the Connecticut Boy Scout Blue Trail District. He was a member of the Washington Art Association and studied under Arthur Getz, creator of many New Yorker covers. He enjoyed gardening, reading, and painting in his leisure time. For many years, he was a reader of Horticulture magazine.
Besides his wife of 48 years, he leaves a son, William Ward Carlson of Crofton MD; a daughter, Margaret Carlson Hanoian of North Smithfield, RI; and two grandchildren, Grace Sophia Hanoian and Nicholas Hatfield Hanoian.
His two sisters, Betty Carlson and Grace Carlson Schaeffer, are deceased. Harold G. Schaeffer was Grace's husband.
Memorial services will be held at First Church of Bethlehem, U.C.C., at 1 p.m. on Saturday August 19. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Church of Bethlehem. Arrangements are by the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere.
