Obituary

Janet Mains Taylor, 94, passed away peacefully in her home at Pomperaug Woods in Southbury, Connecticut, on Tuesday, January 2, 2007. She was born on March 22, 1912, in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of Robert Mains and Edith Locke Mains. She was predeceased by her infant sister Eileen and by her husbands John F. Shanley III and Ellis Hayward Hippesley Taylor. She is survived by her three children, Eileen Shanley Kraus and her husband Harold of West Hartford, Madelyn Shanley Kligora and her husband John of Madison, and her son Robert Hayward Taylor of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She also leaves four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. After graduating from Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts, she lived and worked in Boston and then returned to the family home in Maplewood, New Jersey. She married and raised her family in Maplewood, Summit and Short Hills, New Jersey. During this time, she was also an active volunteer with the Junior League, Community Congregational Church, Scouts, PTA and several other organizations. In 1978, she moved to Heritage Village, Southbury where her volunteer commitment included Literacy Volunteers of America, Meals on Wheels, and the Mattatuck Museum Arts & History Center of Waterbury. In 1995, she moved to Pomperaug Woods in Southbury where she participated in several committees advising on the quality of life in the community. She loved her home and its surroundings. We give thanks for the loving care giving of Gail Milam whose love is returned.

Services: A memorial service celebrating Janet Mains Taylor's life will be held at Pomperaug Woods, 80 Heritage Road, Southbury, on January 13 at 3: 30 P.M. Burial is private.
