James J. Reilly, 83, of 16 Charter Oak Drive, died Monday January 29, 2007 at River Glen Health Care Center, Southbury. He was the husband of Clare Rita (Murtaugh) Reilly.
Mr. Reilly was born April 17, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late James and Margaret (Berry) Reilly. He graduated from James Madison High School, Brooklyn, where he received the Medal of Excellence in Athletics. In 1940, he was invited to try out for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of WW II and served in Iowa Jim.
He was a graduate of St. John's University in New York. Mr. Reilly was a New York City Fireman for 26 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant and receiving numerous commendations. He was member of the American Legion in Seaford, NY. Formerly of Rosedale, New York, he and his wife retired to Spring Hill, FL, where he enjoyed bowling and gardening. He moved to Connecticut two years ago to be closer to his family.
Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his devoted son, James G. Reilly and his wife Lisa, and two grandsons, James and Brian all of Oxford. He leaves several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. He also has a son, William Reilly of Deer Park, NY.
Services: Mass Friday, February 2 at 10 am at St. William the Abbott Roman Catholic Church, Seaford, NY.
Visitation: Calling hours to be held at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, 3863 Merrick Rd., Seaford, NY on Thursday, February 1 from 2: 00 to 4: 00 and 7: 00 to 9: 00 pm.
