James Robert Hocking, 82, of Roxbury died on July 17, 2012. Mr. Hocking was born in Chicago, IL on October 20, 1929, the third child of Zada Gertrude Bone and Frank Hocking. He was raised in Oglesby, IL. After graduating from LaSalle Peru High School, he attended the US Naval Academy where he graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering. He spent six years in the Navy; serving as Deck Officer on the USS Glynn and then in Naval Intelligence at the Pentagon and Port Lyautey, Morocco. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
After leaving the Navy, Mr. Hocking received an MBA from the University of Chicago Business School. He worked for the Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago before moving on to John Hancock Life Insurance in Boston, Schroeder Capital Management in NYC, and Templeton International in Fort Lauderdale Florida. He was the Chief Investment Officer of Private Banking at Citibank in NYC before retiring.
A long commitment to the Episcopal Church led Mr. Hocking to serve on the vestry of Trinity Church Wall Street for two terms and to become a trustee for the Archbishop of Canterbury's Anglican Communion Fund. During retirement he enjoyed connections with numerous organizations including the Racquet and Tennis Club of NYC, The Pilgrims, and the Gibraltar - American Council. He never lost his ties with the military and served as Vive-President & Director of the Navy League's New York Council.
Mr. Hocking is preceded in death by his sister Mary Jane and brother Ted. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Hasselman Hocking. They have five children (Scott, Leslie, Jennifer, Rachel, and Doug) and eight grandchildren (Sarah Jane, Sophie, Nicholas, Rosalie, Lily, Jacob, Peter, and Rebecca).

Services: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 28 at 11am at Christ Church, 4 Weller's Bridge Road in Roxbury, CT. Burial will follow in Roxbury Cemetery.
Visitation: Calling hours will be held on Saturday, July 21 from 1: 00pm-4: 00pm at the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main Street North.
