IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James H.
Churchill
May 14, 1947 – March 4, 2016
James H. Churchill, 68 of Woodbury, CT died unexpectedly on March 4, 2016. Jim was born on May 14, 1947 to parents Dorothy and Howard Churchill. He graduated from Woodbury High School in 1965 and was quick to enlist in the US Army in the fall of 1966. He was assigned to the 196th Light Infantry Brigade near Tay Ninh, Vietnam, as a cannoneer in Battery C, 2nd Battalion of the brigade's 32nd Artillery.
Jim was the first-born to a growing family of carpenters and was fortunate to learn the trade from his father Howard Churchill. Upon returning from Vietnam, Jim returned to his love of carpentry, working alongside his father and brother Gary. Years later as owner of Churchill Builders, he continued the tradition with his two eldest sons, who still work in the industry today.
Jim was most proud of his family and never confused his priorities. His best days were those spent on the beaches of North Truro with old friends and family,a passion he instilled family wide.
He was a well-respected building contractor credited with some of the most noteworthy homes of Litchfield County. His example as a gentleman, craftsman, and leader was observed by many and will continue beyond his passing. For all those who had the experience to work with Jim, he was a true professional, honest, and loyal to his people.
Jim enjoyed collecting art, home improvement projects, washing dishes, and giving his children and grandchildren tough-to-unwrap birthday and holiday gifts. His love for his family and unbound generosity will be deeply missed.
Jim is survived by his wife Catherine Sweeny, his children, Rafe Churchill and his wife Heide Hendricks, Seth Churchill and his wife Kelly Churchill, Ben Churchill, Summer Churchill and Chase Churchill, as well as Catherin's three children, William Heilshorn, Margaret Heilshorn, and Henry Heilshorn. His brother Gary Churchill, two nieces Melissa and Lauren, four grandchildren and his former spouses Diane Churchill and Beverly Churchill also survive him.
