James J. Burns, husband of Carol McEneaney Burns, died Sunday August 28, 2022. Jim was born on April 27, 1933, the son of the late John H. and Alice Lavery Burns. He attended St. Margaret's Grammar School, Sacred Heart High School, and was a graduate of the University of Connecticut. Following his service in the Army, Jim went to work for Rafferty Brown Steel Co., now Coils Plus, for 47 years, retiring as Vice-President of Sales. Until recently, he worked part time at Lyons Slitting.
Jim was an avid sports fan, the Boston Red Sox, and New York Giants, in particular. He was a member of the Watertown Golf Club and the Country Club of Waterbury and golfed at various courses through the years. In addition, he was an avid reader, enjoyed music and travel. He loved the company of family and friends.
Jim's Catholic faith was the bedrock of his life. While in Prospect, he attended St. Anthony's Church and contributed to its CYO program. He was a weekly presence at MiddSouth Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Church in Southbury, greeting parishioners and ushering.
Jim is survived by his wife Carol and daughters Karen Wappler and Susan Vitone, as well as grandchildren Jessica, Kasey, and Nicholas and his wife Tiffany and step-grandchildren Sam, Ivy and Will Wappler. He is also survived by his brother Edward, sister Mary Alice Massaro and her husband Danny, sister Anne Sweeney, Brother-in-law Edward Cooney, and his wife Peggy, as well as many nieces and nephews.
James was pre-deceased by Margaret Cooney Burns, his first wife, as well as his brother John and his wife Joan, his brother-in-law, Timothy Sweeney, and his sister-in-law Eileen Burns.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday September 6, 2022 from 5-7 P.M. at Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, 235 Main St. N., Southbury. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday September 7, 2022 at 11 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St. S., Southbury. Burial will be immediately following the service at Pine Hill Cemetery, Southbury.
