Isabel Sorzano Ince, a resident of Garden City, New York for more than fifty years, died on December 5, 2008 in Southbury, Connecticut at the Pomperaug Woods retirement community.
Born on April 13, 1912, Isabel was the youngest of four children born to Blanche Downs Sorzano and Julio Federico Sorzano de Tejada. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1933 and married George Ronald Ince in 1936. After living in Brooklyn and Lynbrook, they settled in Garden City in 1945.
Isabel Ince was one of the group of determined, energetic and practical women who formed the Garden City Library Committee which brought about the opening of the Garden City Public Library in 1952. She was a faithful volunteer at Winthrop Hospital for many years and an active member of the Wellesley-on-Long Island Club, as well as the American Association of University Women. An enthusiastic tennis player, she was noted for her unique and effective backhand. Both she and Mr. Ince were members of the Garden City Casino, the Cherry Valley Country Club and the Garden City Community Church.
Six years after her husband's death in 1990, Mrs. Ince moved into Pomperaug Woods in Southbury, Connecticut where she joined the Welcoming Committee, the Library Committee and several bridge groups. While her health had deteriorated over the last two years, she retained her sense of humor and sunny disposition.Isabel Sorzano Ince is survived by her five children: Judith Craven of Southbury, Connecticut; Catherine Stevens of Denver, Colorado; George Ince of Norwalk, Connecticut; Carlie Wille of Greenville, North Carolina and John Ince of Mill Valley, California; fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
