Hugh Charles Bell, age 92, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025. Hugh was born on May 14, 1933, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. At the age of 14, he immigrated with his family to New Jersey, beginning a life defined by curiosity, determination, and innovation. He went on to graduate from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, earning a degree in engineering that would launch a pioneering career in the emerging field of computer technology.

In the early years of the computer age, Hugh worked on foundational computer systems with Bendix and General Electric, contributing to technologies that helped shape modern computing. In 1968, he moved to New Canaan, Connecticut, where his entrepreneurial spirit flourished. In the early 1970s, Hugh founded Dataline Corporation, a computer company that grew into a highly successful enterprise. After selling the company, he retired to focus on what mattered most to him — his family.

Hugh took great pride in his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his son, Steven Bell and his wife Sarah of Southbury, Connecticut; his daughter, Susan Bell and her husband John Brissett of Norwalk, Connecticut; and his son, Scott Bell and his wife Cheryl of Cave Creek, Arizona. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Heather Bell of Hermosa Beach, California, and her partner Jake Mervine; Emily Bell McNamara of Charlestown, Massachusetts, and her husband Kevin; and Samantha Bell and her brother Jack of Cave Creek, Arizona. In November of 2024, Hugh became a proud great-grandfather to Prescott “Scottie” McNamara of Charlestown, Massachusetts, a role that brought him immense joy. Hugh is also survived by his niece, Kim Handy (Darby) of Bayville NJ, and his grand-niece, Kelly Handy of the USCG stationed in Staten Island NY.

In 2021, Hugh and his beloved wife, Diane, moved to Southbury, Connecticut, to be closer to their eldest son. Diane preceded him in death in August of 2023, and Hugh carried her memory with him always.

Hugh will be remembered for his sharp intellect and wit, his entrepreneurial vision and his deep devotion to his family. His legacy lives on through the generations he inspired and the innovations he helped bring into the world.

Celebrating Hugh - a warm and gifted man who has given so much to all who knew him.
