IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Honoria "Nonie"
(Hine) Diebold
March 4, 1952 – February 5, 2025
Honoria "Nonie" Hine Diebold, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, died peacefully on February 5, 2025, after a 2.5 year battle with Glioblastoma. She is survived by her husband, Dudley G. Diebold, the love of her life for 47 years, and her daughter, Caitlin Kiely Diebold, and her husband, Kevin O'Connell. She will be greatly missed by her grandsons, Edward James Diebold O'Connell and Patrick Kevin Diebold O'Connell, who always cherished their time with "Nana".
Nonie was born in Waterbury, CT to Helen Kiely Hine and James Elliot Hine, on March 4, 1952. She was the youngest of three; her two older brothers, John Edward Hine and Joseph Richard Hine. Her parents and brothers predeceased her.
Family always came first for Nonie. As a young girl she loved to go shopping in downtown Waterbury with her cousin and great aunts where they would go to Engleman's Department Store. Summers were spent at The Brook in Woodbury, tubing and swimming in the Nonnewaug River. Stories are still told from the famous roadtrip to see relatives in Ohio, which produced countless memories full of riding in the back of a station wagon with rear facing seats and drinking milk shakes as they went. In high school she fell in love with fast cars that growl and that love lasted a lifetime. She caught the eye of a man working as a mechanic at her father's garage and that's where Nonie and Dudley's love story began.
Nonie was a generous spirit who was many things to many people. In her family she was a caregiver and support for her nieces and nephews; Joseph James Hine, James Elliot Hine II, Jeffrey Allen Hine, Sherri Hine McKenna, Nicolina Grace Hine, and John Ernest Hine and her step daughter, Daphne Ann Russell. She was an amazing cook and for a time ran a small catering business with her best friend and cousin Margaret Houghton Capozzi. She spent a lot of time later in life researching her genealogy and her historic connections to this world.
As a mom she was PTO president, founder of the elementary school lunch program, lunchroom server, swim team party hostess, dance recital stage manager and prop master, church school teacher, substitute teacher, Board of Education member and President. She gave her time, talent and treasure to all the local causes that she was involved in throughout her life. She gave her daughter and most recently her grandchildren unconditional love and support, for which they are eternally grateful.
Nonie will be remembered for her generous spirit, hardworking nature and the care, love and sass she gave to so many. She had a special place in her heart for her many caregivers and friends; especially Lori Lee, Sean Murphy and Paige Vickers. We will continue her legacy of philanthropy, support and kindness; keeping her memory alive for generations to come.
The family is holding a memorial service at Christ Episcopal Church, Roxbury on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 11am. There will be a celebration of Nonie's life hosted at her beloved home this coming summer.
