Obituary

Southbury – Helen L. Johnson, 99, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. She was born on May 10, 1922 in Orwell, Vermont, daughter of the late James and Catherine (Clark) Leonard and was raised on the family farm.

Helen was the devoted spouse of Roland Johnson (Dude) for 52 years and they lived in Dude's hometown of Washington, CT for most of their married life.  She and Roland enjoyed spending winters in Florida before she became a doting caregiver to her grandchildren. They were, also, golf mixed-doubles teammates at The Washington Club, and they remained playing partners for many years.  She and Dude also helped manage the Washington Club pro shop to help David, the club pro.

Helen used the postal services, telephone, email, and Facebook to remain close to family and friends and provided them with continuous conversation and advice. Helen remained a supportive, influential voice in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She spent the last 12 years of her life living in Southbury with son Don and his wife, Elizabeth.

Helen is survived by two children, Don (Elizabeth Spencer) Johnson of Southbury and Linda (Ken) Brown of Albuquerque, NM; daughter-in-law Mary (John) Andrews of Aiken, SC;  five grandchildren, David (Susan) Johnson of Roswell, GA; Abbey (Ricky) Henne of Carlsbad, CA, Jami (Ernest) Darkoh of Capetown, South Africa; Nathan (Tina) Brown of Chicago, IL; and Kyle (Veronica) Johnson of San Diego, CA; great-grandchildren,  Zade,  Kian and Kaia Darkoh, Ari Henne, Calvin Hickey, Cayden Johnson, and Rachel and Ethan Johnson. She was predeceased by her husband, Roland Johnson and her son, David Johnson.

Helen loved cooking for her family and creating homemade gifts from her sewing, knitting, and cross stitching. She had great affection for all animals, especially her annual hummingbirds, and spent long winter days busy with puzzles, novels, and old movies.  Helen enjoyed all the seasons with her love of gardening, raking leaves, and shoveling snow which she did until she was 98.

Helen will have a private graveside service, where she will be interred with Roland and David as well as the remains of her two amazing dogs, Greta and Yulie.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Washington Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 294, Washington Depot, CT, 06794. To leave an online condolence, visit www.munsonloveterefuneralhome.com.
