Obituary

Mandi Gerwien was born Harriett Mary Amanda Hahn on September 20, 1922 on the family farm in Callicoon Center, upstate New York. Over her long life, Mandi held a variety of jobs: she had her own home salon as a hairdresser; she made submarine parts in Singer during World War II; and she worked in war-time Remington Arms as a telegraph operator for the personnel department.

A Southbury resident for more than 50 years, Mandi later worked as a teacher's aide in the Region 15 school district. Active in the Church of the Epiphany, she served on the altar guild, the finance committee, the vestry, the card ministry, the sandwich brigade, and wherever else her help was needed. In 2011, she organized the placing of 6,141 American flags across the church property; each flag honoring a man or woman who gave his or her life in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was a memorable display that involved major volunteer participation and coordination, both from the church and the community, and it was an event of which Mandi was rightfully proud.

Mandi is survived by four children: Karen DeLucas, Kathy Sheehan, Kendal Coulson, and Christopher Gerwien; she was predeceased by one son, Keith Coulson, and her beloved husband George William (Bill) Gerwien. Mandi's love and legacy lives on in a host of loving grandchildren and great grandchildren in whom she delighted. Mandi wanted her life to be remembered as having been blessed and happy.
