Hamlin Leonard, 90, of Southbury, died peacefully Friday October 16 at Pomperaug Woods. He was the husband of Lisbeth (Skipton) Leonard.
Born February 10, 1919 in Burlington, Vermont, he was the son of the late George and Jeanette Leonard. He attended public schools in Larchmont and Mamaroneck NY, receiving a full academic scholarship from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a degree in Industrial Engineering and a number of awards and honors.
After a 4-year stint at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington DC during WW2, where he developed special electro-mechanical devices and test equipment, he moved to Darien Connecticut for the next 60 years before retiring to Southbury in 2007.
Over his long career he functioned as a free-lance specialist, designing new products for over 100 different corporate and private clients. He is listed as the sole inventor in over 50 U.S. patents spanning some 20 different fields. While devoting his life to his work, he was also active for many years in the Troupers Light Opera Company and the Darien Community Band.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, his three sons Skipton, Douglas and Daniel, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
