IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Grace A.
Vaughan
June 21, 1926 – March 7, 2012
Mrs. Grace A. Vaughan, 85, of Heritage Village died Wednesday March 7th at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. She was the wife of James W. Vaughan.
Mrs. Vaughan was born June 21, 1926 in New York City, a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Cavanaugh) Altritt. Grace was educated in New York State, graduating from St. Barnabas High School and studying art history at SUNY-Purchase. James and Grace were married on November 5, 1949 at Our Lady of Angels Church in Bronx, New York.
Discovering at an early age that she possessed a soft singing voice with perfect pitch, she sang locally. Toward the end of World War II, she joined the USO and toured various base camps. This experience awakened a love of travel, if not wanderlust, eventually bringing a visit to all 50 states. Being of an amenable nature, she was happy to agree with Jim that the most beautiful was Idaho.
Aside from the USO, she volunteered for the Red Cross as a nurse's aide at the garden spot known as Bellevue Hospital. In Heritage Village she joined just about anything that would have her sign up, from musicale to herb garden to renaissance club to bridge club to glass shop. The list was endless.
Grace A. loved and was loved. Her passing has brought us all closer together, and her memory will water the flower of love. As Shakespeare once commented, "Sweet are the uses of adversity."
In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her 5 children, Christopher Vaughan and his wife Diane and Houston, TX, Margaret Vaughan - Williams and her husband Stuart of Houston, TX, Monica McGonigle and her husband Thomas of Fairfax, VA, Marcella Vaughan of Houston, TX, and William D. Vaughan and his wife Kathleen of Bristol; six grandchildren, Katherine, Stephen, and Vincent McGonicle, Joseph and Alexander Vaughan and Stephanie and Kelly Vaughan.
