Obituary

Gordon Barclay, 76, actor, died on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, in Waterbury Hospital. He was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease for the past two years, but died after sustaining a hip injury. Formerly a longtime resident of Hollywood, California, Gordon recently made his home at Paradigm Healthcare of Prospect, CT. The son of Anne (Robb) and William Barclay of Aberdeen, Scotland, Gordon left school at 15 to support his widowed mother and disabled older brother, Douglas. From 1950-52, he was a member of a prestigious Scottish theatre group receiving many positive reviews for his Shakespearean and dramatic lead roles. Gordon immigrated to the United States in 1953. He enlisted in the US Army serving in Korea from 1953-55 as a tank captain and in special services entertainment division. After an honorable discharge with commendations for his skill and leadership, Gordon made his home in Hollywood to pursue his acting dream. He performed in theater groups up and down the coast of California. He met his ex-wife wife, Patricia (Oppenheim Barclay) Frederick in 1962. Gordon continued attending auditions and acting in local theater troupes to much acclaim while doing commercial and television work and proofreading scripts to support his wife and 2 young daughters. They divorced in 1966. Gordon was a member of the Screen Actor's Guild. His film credits include "The Collector" and "Last of the American Hoboes". In the 1970's, Gordon portrayed an Amish artist for Kleenex brand tissues Amish design series. Gordon retired from Warner Brothers as a script proofreader in 2001. In addition to his love of theater and drama, Gordon enjoyed screenwriting, reading biographies of great actor/directors, fishing from the Santa Monica pier, visiting the Santa Anita and Hollywood Park race tracks and long walks along Hollywood Boulevard. Gordon is survived by his ex-wife Patricia Frederick of Middlebury, Connecticut; daughter, Rachel Barclay of Middlebury Connecticut; and daughter, Jennifer Barclay of San Marcos, California. He also leaves behind his son-in-law Michael Pekovich and two grandchildren, Eli and Anna Barclay Pekovich of Middlebury, CT.

Services: A Memorial Service is planned for Monday, July 20, 7 pm at B'nai Israel, 444 Main St. North, Southbury.
