Obituary

Gladys M. Oneto entered eternal rest peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Gladys was the daughter of the late Carl and Marie Peterson and wife for 74 years of the late Alfred J. "Fred" Oneto, Sr. Born in April 1911, she recently celebrated her hundredth birthday. Gladys was raised in Athol and Gardner, MA and graduated from Gardner High School in 1928. She then attended Fitchburg Normal School and earned her teaching certification. She first taught lower elementary grades in Collinsville, CT. Later, she worked a number of years as a secretary and bookkeeper for Cardinal Claim Service, an insurance claims adjusting firm on Long Island where she was living in New Hyde Park. When they retired, Gladys and Fred moved to Belchertown, MA, to be near her family. Twenty years later they moved to Southbury to be nearer to their son and grandchildren. Gladys always enjoyed music. She played violin and led a small jazz band while in high school and she also sang in the church choir while they lived in Belchertown. One thing Gladys always loved was cooking. Her secret dream was to open a small restaurant someday. Gladys was a caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her son, Alfred J. Oneto, Jr. of Fairfield, and his wife Jean; her granddaughters Kathleen Thornton and her husband Jeff of Manchester, Linda Sullivan and her husband Jim of Woodbridge and Carol Condit of Southbury. She will also be missed by grandsons Jeremy Thornton and his wife Emily, Kyle Thornton and his fiancé© Jen, and Andrew D'Ambrose and his fiancé© Amanda.
