Georgina Amador de los Rios Alfonso, 91, of Coughlin Drive, formerly of Grace Meadows, Southbury and Oxford, CT died Tuesday December 10, 2013 at Bethel Health Care Center.
Ms. de los Rios Alfonso was born in Havana, Cuba on March 1, 1922 to Carmen Alfonso Pena and Rene Amador de los Rios. As a young woman in Cuba, she married John Richard Brown with whom she had 4 children, Harry Brown, Richard Brown, Carlos Brown and Maria Lourdes Brown Sepulveda. She came to the United States during the 1950's and years later had a second marriage to Enrique Rodriguez and they together had a daughter Maria del Carmen Rodriguez Amador. Georgina was predeceased by both husbands and sons Harold and Carlos.
Georgina graduated from the University of Havana in Havana, Cuba with a bachelor's degree in teaching Home Economics and as she got older came with her family to the United States. She was always a very hard working individual and held various positions throughout the years both to help raise her family and provide support to the communities around her first in Miami, Florida and later in Connecticut.
Her best known community work, however, came about in the years she spent as a bilingual liaison for the Hartford School District at the Barnard Brown School in Hartford, Ct. and then as a field representative and coordinator of the Red Cross Disaster teams that provided aide to victims in fires or disasters in Hartford at the Hartford Red Cross Chapter of the National Red Cross. Her work also widespread influence within the community in Hartford, particularly the Latino community, by bringing programs out to people to help with poison prevention of children, aids awareness, child abuse and basic first aid. She also participated in large National Red Cross endeavors throughout the years such as the acclamation of the Cuban refugees at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa. and providing support needed after tropical storms in Puerto Rico. She retired in 1987 to spend time with her grown children and their families first in New York and later in Connecticut. During her retirement years she continued to help her community through work in her local church.
She received numerous awards and recognition from private and public sectors throughout her many years of community work. The Outstanding Puerto Rican Woman of Connecticut Award in 1975 and the 1976 Service Award from the Hartford Humans Relations Commission were two she often recalled.
Her spirit and smile is still remembered in Hartford today. She will always be remembered by her family with dear love and gratefulness.
In addition to her children, Georgina leaves 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Services: A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday December 14th at 11am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church 733 Oxford Rd. Oxford, Ct. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 669 Platt Rd. in Watertown Ct.
Visitation: Friends may call Friday December 13th from 7-9pm at the Southbury funeral home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main St. North.
