IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George
Currie
March 12, 1929 – October 31, 2024
George Kennedy Currie, 95, of Connecticut, passed away on October 31, 2024.
George was born on March 12, 1929 to parents Harry Currie and Dorothy Currie. As a child, the family moved several times, with homes in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. He discovered his passion for flying at an early age and followed his dream. He attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida and became a qualified aircraft mechanic and pilot. He served in the Air Force reserve and from there, had a successful and rewarding career as a corporate pilot, including achieving the goal of an around-the-world trip. For much of his career, he flew for the Rockefeller family, even piloting "Executive 2" while Nelson was Vice President.
While beginning his career as a pilot, George met Carolyn Hobson of Danbury, Connecticut. They were married in 1958 and had three children: Sheryl, Sandra, and Scott. He was a loving father and a great provider, leading with his high moral standards, strong faith, humble nature, and silly sense of humor. He was active in the church, including serving as deacon.
After retiring, George followed his next dream – to live on the water and spend his days sailing. He spent many years living in Virginia, a place where he found great joy. He was very active at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Kilmarnock. He also had several roles in Yankee Point Yacht Club, including Commodore. He participated in many races, as well as his favorite pastime of cruising with a group of fellow sailors. The friendships he formed during that time were long-lasting and particularly important to him.
In 2022 he moved back to Connecticut to be closer to family.
George's life was full of wonderful adventures and realized dreams.
He is now reunited with his father, mother, sister, and brother in a peaceful place. He was predeceased by son-in-law John Hardman and nephew David Kahrs. He is survived by his three children Sheri Hardman, Sandy Russell and her husband William, Scott Currie and his wife Mary Ellen Limato, granddaughter Christina Russell, former wife Carolyn Currie, nephew Bob Kahrs and family, niece Carol Stacey and family, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.
The calling hours will be at Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, 2 School Street, Woodbury, CT, on November 6 from 9AM to 10AM, followed by burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, CT.
