Obituary

Fred Barr passed away on November 27, 2024, shortly after his 98th birthday, with his wife Lee by his side.

Fred Myron Barr was born in 1926 to Harry and Gertrude and was the delight of his older brother George. It was a fun childhood with trips to Franklin Park, Fenway Park to see the Red Sox, and the Wingaersheek Beach north of Boston. Attending Boston Public Schools and Boston Latin, Fred was a good enough student to graduate high school in 1943 at the age of 16. Too young to enlist, Fred opted to begin his studies at Northeastern University until he was old enough to take and pass the Eddy test and join the Navy. The Navy sent Fred to Chicago Navy Pier and Great Lakes Training School, and then on to Guam. But Fred has always insisted that he was not a "real veteran" like his brother George since he saw no action. Fred's Naval experience was transformative: he joined as a very young man, he became self- sufficient and quite the ladies' man.

After the war, Fred returned to Boston, Northeastern, and then Harvard to complete his studies. By then he had met Evelyn Robin who he married in 1951 and they had two children, Elissa and Valerie, and grandchildren Bex and Noah Merhar and Camilla Yohn-Barr. Elissa's children especially remember Fred creating cloth napkin bunnies to entertain them at meals and some wonderful trips to Matunuck when they were small. Camilla remembers that Fred would help himself to her french fries and do puzzles with her.

After Evelyn's passing, Fred met Lee Carnese and they have been married for 28 years. Fred was kind and generous, spending time with Lee's four children and many grandchildren. Fred believed strongly in giving back by volunteering and supporting many organizations including Norwalk Community College, Temple Beth El in Norwalk, Norwalk Youth Symphony, and Keystone House. He gave his time to the condo boards in Connecticut and Florida and organized the annual Barr Brunch at Clipper Cove Village. In his later years he supported many many charities including political, Jewish, Women's, and LGBTQ rights.

Fred was an interesting character. He loved new technology including the new laptop he was given for his 95th birthday so he could zoom with his children and grandchildren. He witnessed many technological advances from old tube TVs and the original Mark 1 computer at Harvard, to these amazing portable computers in our pockets that also make phone calls, to the miniaturization of hearing aids that you control with a tiny remote. But Fred, maddeningly, also saved all kinds of things - paper clips, batteries, refrigerator magnets sent as promotions, and he never met a receipt or invoice he didn't want to save.

Fred collected owls made of all different materials – pictures, stuffed, metal, stone. They were all over the house and he would help the grandchildren spot and count the owls. He loved receiving owls as gifts until he, thankfully, decided enough was enough!

In memory of Fred, the family asks that donations be sent to Regional Hospice of CT ( Regional Hospice ), who took amazing care of Fred in his final days, or to the charity of your choice.
