Frank Edward Shepard Jr., 86, of Woodbury, died Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at The Lutheran Home of Southbury. He was the husband of Jean Kirby Shepard. Frank was born March 8, 1928 in Waterbury, son of the late Frank and Rosalie Brenneis Shepard. Frank attended grammar schools in Woodbury and Florida and graduated from Woodbury High School, Class of 1946. He was a member of the Woodbury F.F.A. Vo-Ag School, earning The American Farmer Degree in 1948. Frank worked with his father as commercial potato growers in Woodbury and growing the test plots for the State of Maine Potato Growers until 1968 in Florida. While in Woodbury, Frank was a dairy farmer, raised ponies and beef cattle and ran his Three Rivers Construction business. Frank was proud to serve his Woodbury community by being a member of all phases of town government, including being First Selectman from 1965 to 1971. He was a Life member of the Woodbury Lions Club, being awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship in 1962. A member of St. Teresa's Men's Club, he was the first recipient of the Christian Neighbor Award in 1994, and was a member of the Woodbury Cemetery Association. Besides his wife of 64 years, he is survived by his daughter, Susan J. Shepard and his son, David A. Shepard, both of Woodbury; a granddaughter, Samantha S. Foster and her husband Robb Foster of Lynchburg, VA and many cousins. He was predeceased by his sons Roger and Steven Shepard. Following Frank's wishes, there will be no services. Frank's family want to thank the caring staff of The Lutheran Home for their kindness and care shown to Frank.
