Obituary

Elizabeth "Liz" Anne Matlak Urkawich of Southbury, CT, passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with a debilitating illness. She was the beloved wife of retired Lieutenant Albert Urkawich of the Darien Police Department, where he proudly served for over 27 years.

Born on May 23, 1950, in Stamford, CT, Liz was the daughter of the late Carl Matlak Sr. and Viola (Thompson) Matlak. She lived and grew up in Darien, CT, attending the local school system and graduating from Darien High School in 1969.

Liz had a vibrant love for life and an abundance of creative talents. She was an accomplished watercolor artist who found joy in painting beautiful landscapes, often sharing her work at craft fairs alongside her husband, Al. A talented seamstress as well, Liz created everything from elegant dresses to detailed curtains, sewing many cherished items for family and friends. Her love of music was lifelong; she had a beautiful singing voice and a deep appreciation for a variety of musical styles. Liz also loved the outdoors and treasured family camping trips to places like Acadia National Park in Maine and the shores of Cape Cod, where she found peace in nature and joy in simple moments.  She also went on many enjoyable motorcycle vacations with Al, and they were members of the Blue Knights Police motorcycle group.

Above all, Liz was a woman of strong faith. She had a deep passion for the Lord, Jesus Christ, and her unwavering belief was a guiding light throughout her life and during her illness, offering her strength, hope, and peace even in her most difficult days.

Professionally, Liz dedicated over 15 years of service as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police in Wilton, CT, where she was a valued and respected member of the department.

Albert and Elizabeth were long-time residents of Norwalk, CT, before making their home in Southbury in 2002. Their marriage was a true partnership and a source of deep joy for 54 years.

In addition to her devoted husband Albert, Liz is survived by her two sons: James Urkawich and his wife Anne (Reilly) Urkawich, and their son Paul; and Alan Urkawich and his wife Michele (Morris) Urkawich, and their children Jacob and Abigail. She is also survived by her brothers Joseph Matlak and Richard Matlak. She was predeceased by her brother Carl Matlak Jr.

The family will not be holding a formal funeral service but will honor Liz's memory with a celebration of life, to be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, and in gratitude for the extraordinary compassion and support shown by the hospice nurses during a time of great emotional and physical stress, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Regional Hospice in Liz's memory. Their care was a source of comfort and strength, and your support helps ensure other families receive the same kindness and care.
