Edwin B. Kolsby, of Pomperaug Woods, passed away on Memorial Day, May 30, 2016, at the age of 100.
Edwin was born January 23, 1916 in New York, N.Y., the son of the late Morris and Bertha (Fink) Kolsby. He was the husband of the late Rita J. (Newman) Kolsby.
Edwin was educated at the Ardsley Heights Country School and obtained his Bachelors of Science in Biology from Brooklyn College. He began working for the Bureau of Mines in Washington, DC in 1938, then went on to work for the U.S Department of the Navy on the building of the U.S.S. Missouri from 1940-1944. During this time Edwin worked as a Freelance began selling illustrations to the New Yorker Magazine. This was the start of a 37 year career in print culminating as the International Art Director for the Readers Digest Magazine, in 1979.
During his lifetime Edwin was the recipient of awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Boys Club of America, the Society of Illustrators, the Orlando Museum of Art, and the RCA Records Design Award.
He was a member of the Overseas Press Club, the Type Directors Club, the Typophiles, the Illustrators Club, and the Art Directors Club.
Edwin was Co-Founder of the Adventures and Ideas Organization at Heritage Village and the Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society.
Edwin is survived by his children. Richard (Tricia) Kolsby, Susan (Russell) Kniehl and Iris Kolsby. His grandchildren Aimee Kolsby, Lisa (David) Murray, Laurel Kolsby, and Melissa (Steven) Beardsley, Kristi (Michael) Nguyen, Laura Kniehl, Andrew Longhi and James Kolsby. His great-grandchildren Michael & Kyla Nguyen, Meghan and Myles Murray, Emma and Molly Beardsley and Luc Kolsby. He is further survived by Marion Kolsby.
