Edward Clark Harney, son of Norma and Edward A. Harney and born in New Haven on September 16, 1940, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025. A lifelong resident of Southbury, CT, Ed grew up on Rt. 67 and helped at Olson's farm back when traffic stopped for cows to cross the street. This fostered his love of animals (save squirrels), from the roaming deer and turkeys in his yard to his pet donkeys, guinea hens and dogs.
Eddie built many houses in town with his father, and could have been a successful carpenter, but in 1960 he interviewed for Algonquin Gas Transmission. He loved to tell the story of how they nearly didn't hire him, believing he wouldn't last. From the age of 19 until he was 82, Ed worked in the right of way field, becoming what coworker Tammy Keith calls "a legend in the pipeline world." A former member of the Right of Way Association of America, Ed spent his last 20 plus years as a consultant for various natural gas companies, including Duke and Spectra. In his later years, when there was a question about pipeline construction, Ed was known to search his attic for slides, and he could produce the actual 50-year-old photos of the project in question.
From 1963 to 1969, he served in the Waterbury branch of the Army Reserves Signal Corps. Ed was baptized, confirmed and married at the United Church of Christ in Southbury. He served as a Deacon and Building Committee Member there in the 1980's and later at the South Britain Congregational Church. An original board member of Southbury Athletic Association, he coached his daughter's Parks and Rec softball teams in the 70's, and worked on the town committee that built Ballantine Pool. A devoted father and grandfather, he loved to vacation at the family cabin in Maine on Lake Damariscotta, and enjoyed eating any meal his daughter cooked as much as going to a restaurant. The family is grateful to the Monarch in Southbury, where Ed spent his final weeks and a nurse told his daughter, "He must be a great man. There is a constant parade of people to visit him."
Ed will be forever missed by his daughter, Elizabeth (Ellie) Hanna and his son-in-law, Ken, and three grandchildren, Steven, Christopher and Catie. He also leaves his loving sister Elinor Schiavi (Don) and nieces, Susan Schiavi and Tamara Duhamel (Joe). He was the husband of Ruth Bromfield Harney for 40 years, and a beloved member of her family, particularly June and lifelong friend Bud Bennett. A favorite uncle to many, a treasured mentor to colleagues in the pipeline field, he will be remembered always for his wonderful humor and above all, his kindness, wisdom, generosity and integrity.
