Edward W. Barry, 77 of Southbury, CT passed away on Sunday, May 31st, 2015 at Vitas Hospice at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, CT. Born on November 24, 1937 in Stamford, CT he was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Cosgrove) Barry and the husband of 51 years to Barbara (Walker) Barry. He loved books, gardening and dogs. He graduated with honors in 1960 from the University of Connecticut and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Oxford University in 2000.
Ed spent twenty years at Macmillan Publishing Company, achieving the post of President of The Free Press, and subsequently President to the Professional Books Division, which included The Free Press, Macmillan Library Reference, Schirmer Books, and Macmillan Scientific, Technical, Medical, and Professional. As the President of Oxford University Press USA from 1982 until 2000 he oversaw the U.S. operations.
The works published at both Macmillan and Oxford Press during his tenure won an impressive number of Pulitzer and Bancroft Prizes. He was most proud of the seven Dartmouth Medals from the American Library Association for various reference works on religion, biography, and bio-ethics.
He was also on the Board of Directors of the Online Computer Library Center ("OCLC") from 2002 to 2014; the Advisory Board of Pace University Graduate Program in Publishing from 1990 to 2002; and on the Board of Trustees of Columbia University Press from 2000 to 2007 as well as other University Press Boards. He was also a member of the Board of Directors for Knovel from 2000 to 2012 and on the advisory Committees of American University of Cairo Press (2000-2010); Central European University Press (2000 to present), and John Hopkins University Press (2001 to 2008).
Besides his wife Barbara, Edward is survived by their Daughter Wendy E. Barry and Son-in-law David A. Hinton, a grandson Seth M. Barry-Hinton; their Son Neil E. Barry and Daughter-in-law Julianne C. Barry and Granddaughters Grace E. Barry and Emma K. Barry; as well as his sister Margaret Spezzano and his brother Jeremiah Barry and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Animal League of America, 25 Davis Avenue, Port Washington, NY 11050.

Services: There will be a Memorial Service at 2: 30 P.M. on Friday, June 5th, 2015 at the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main Street North in Southbury.
Visitation: Friends may call at the Funeral Home from 2: 00 P.M. until 4: 00 P.M on Friday, June 5th, 2015.
