Obituary

Woodbury
Duncan McDougall, aged 76, of Woodbury, CT died Friday, August 30th, 2013.

His careers, interests, ideas and hobbies were as eclectic as his wide circle of friends.

He loved birds, trees, flowers - especially daylilies, hostas, gardens, the outdoors, farms and a good political discussion. He could swing a hammer, plumb a line, fix a faucet, repair a radiator and tune an engine which ideally involved the purchase of new tools.

He moved to Woodbury to become the first Executive Director of the Flanders Nature Center. Along the way, he met and made a wide variety of friends that included hippies and police officers, teachers and business moguls, retirees and stay-at-home mothers, nuns and doctors, artists and lawyers.

Some of his accomplishments included preserving the 600 acre Whittemore Sanctuary, starting a vegetable farm business called The Garden and establishing a blacksmithing forge business.

His interest in preserving Woodbury led to service on a myriad of town committees and boards, including zoning, inland wetlands, and conservation. He had a special zeal for planning and zoning and advised countless Woodbury property owners on the complexity of planning and zoning regulations. A Woodbury public meeting was not complete without his appearance at the microphone.

He did not let his recent illness deter him from his civic duties - casting a vote on the Woodbury town budget a week before his death.

His many friends, family, political allies and coffee shop buddies will miss him greatly.

He is survived by his wife Francine McDougall, his daughter Tracey McDougall and her husband Gary Kleeblatt of Wethersfield, CT, his daughter Carey McDougall of Canton, OH and his son Bradford McDougall and his wife Therese Mulvey of Granby, CT, 4 grandchildren Olivia, Devon, Georgia and Zoe and a sister Ann King of North Carolina.
