WOODBURY - Douglas Whitman Rowell, 92, died Monday, April 16 at ASHLAR of Newtown. Also known by many as "Whit", he was the husband of the late Anne (Pesonen) Rowell. He was born in Chetlo Harbor, Washington in 1915, son of the late Douglas and Theresa (Whitman) Rowell.
He was raised in Toronto, Ontario and received an engineering degree from Michigan Technological University. He joined his father and brother John at the Anaconda America Brass Company where he was employed for 35 years. Accomplishments include 12 patents of which the most significant was the invention of the process for making welded copper tubing which has become the industry standard.
After retiring in 1975, he and his wife Anne traveled and spent many months each year at their family cottage in Katrine Ontario. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the Woodbury Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his sons, Douglas W. Rowell, Jr. of Southbury, CT and James P. Rowell of Stockton, NJ.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Rowell and his wife, Anne Liise Rowell, who died in January 2007 on Saturday May 5th at 11:30am at the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson - Lovetere, 2 School St. Memorial contributions can be made to Ashlar of Newtown through the Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut.
