Obituary

DONALD G. HAMMOND, 82, died Sunday March 4th after a 3 year battle with Myelodysplasia Syndrome, a blood disorder. Don was born in Brooklyn, NY son of the late Godfrey and Irma (Gillespie) Hammond and was raised in Scarsdale, NY. Upon his High School graduation in 1942, Don entered the service. He served in WWII, joining the Army Signal Corp. Don was assigned to General Patton's 3rd Army as it moved through France and Belgium to the Battle of the Bulge. Post - War, he pursued studies and graduated from Wesleyan University.
In 1954, he married Barbara Nelms Miller of Narberth, PA. Don was employed by CBS for over 30 years, primarily within Network Promotions. Don and Barbara raised 4 children in Darien, CT where they resided for 37 years prior to moving to Heritage Village in Southbury, CT in 2004. He had a lifetime love of sailing and maritime subjects, was a past member of the American Yacht Club in Rye, NY, The Tokeneke Club and The Darien Senior Men's Association of Darien, CT. He enjoyed vacationing with his family on Martha's Vineyard. Into his 70's, he continued to sail on Long Island Sound. Both Don and Barbara served as long time volunteer docents at The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT. Don will be remembered for his keen wit and intelligence, his passion for history, literature, writing, and his unfailing love and devotion to his family.
Besides Don's wife, Barbara, of 53 years, he is survived by his four children, Cynthia Schara and Gail Luce of Buffalo, NY, Peter of Boulder, CO and David of Wilson, WY, two son-in-laws, two daughter-in-laws, 2 grandchildren, his twin brother Robert of Heritage Village, two other brothers, Philip and William and a sister Marjorie Castimore.
All services are at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Don's name to the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital, C/O John F. Pezzimenti, 95 Locust Ave., Danbury, CT 06810. The Southbury Funeral Home of Munson - Lovetere, 235 Main St. North, is in charge of arrangements.
