David Russell Duvernoy

1935-2023

David Russell Duvernoy of Woodbury Connecticut, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 while at River Glen Nursing Home in Southbury Connecticut, where he had resided during the past ten months.

The son of Helen V. Duvernoy and Russell E. Duvernoy, David was born on July 21, 1935 in New York City, New York. They resided as a family in Huntington on Long Island where David attended local schools, as well as Sunday School at the towns Presbyterian Church.

Early on, David's father left his marriage to Helen and married Mary Duvernoy. David was always included as a first-born son in his fathers second home and Mary soon became a second Mother to him.

David was an active youth and thanks to Long Islands' proximity to water, he enjoyed swimming, sailing and canoeing. He also became a Boy Scout achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended High School in New Hampshire, graduating from Proctor Academy, which he enjoyed very much. Downhill skiing was a favorite sport while there. He attended Syracuse University and the Pratt Art Institute for a period of time. He proudly enlisted in The United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal, after 8 years of service.

Starting at an early age, his work life included various positions at the family business, Duvernoy Bakeries, in both New York City and White Plains, New York. Davids lifelong passion, however, was as an artist. His talent was evident as a very young child and continued throughout his life. Painting came very naturally to him and many large and some small canvasses emerged from his meditative creativity.

Survivors include his rock and decades long life partner Susan A. Norwell and five half brothers and sisters along with their spouses and children: Mary Anne Lawler of Maine, Russell Duvernoy of Massachusetts, Henry Duvernoy and Eugene Duvernoy of Washington State, and Bernadette L. Duvernoy of Illinois.

David was the happiest when creating and sharing his art, caring for and being with his several dogs and cats, as well as being a part of and with his extended family.

David will be missed indeed. May he rest in peace.
