IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David F.
Avery
January 30, 1939 – November 5, 2022
David F. Avery, 83, of Oxford, passed away on November 5th, 2022 peacefully at Griffin Hospital. He was the loving husband to Kazuko Avery for 40 years.
David was born in Nyack, NY to the late Joseph Avery and C. Marian (Hoyt) Avery. He spent his childhood in Stony Point, NY. His love of lizards and amphibians eventually drew him to Utah where he earned his doctorate in Zoology and Herpetology at Brigham Young University.
He returned to the East Coast after earning his PhD to accept a position at Southern Connecticut State University, where he remained on faculty for nearly 3 decades.
David lived a rich and fulfilling life. Teaching brought him great joy, both in and outside of the classroom. He had a passion for exploring the world around him through the lens of a scientist and he would spend his free time teaching his daughters about the flora and fauna in their surroundings and regaling them with stories of his outdoor adventures, thus passing along a love of nature. Forever curious and adventurous, David also enjoyed traveling the world, including armchair travel as mobility became a challenge in his later years.
Besides his wife, Kazuko, David is survived by his two daughters, Erika and Charlie Abraham of LaVerne, CA and Naomi (Avery) and David Kingston of Portland, OR, along with 4 loving grandchildren. His sense of humor, warm embrace and loving nature will be missed by all.
