Obituary

Culver Hopkinson Griffin, long-time and much loved square dance caller, died at home early Sunday morning, November 9. He was 92.

Culver called square dances throughout the New York metropolitan area, New England and Great Britain since 1946. He had the honor of calling dances for young and old, notable and notorious - from actor Paul Newman to elementary school students to square dance groups and everyone in between. Always one to keep up with the times, Culver transferred his dance tunes to the more portable electronic medium, an Apple iPod, in 2005.

A love of Great Britain had Culver traveling to that part of the world many times in his life, both to visit friends made over the years and to call square dances at festivals and in small towns. He was most recently there for his 90th birthday, when he called at the Sidmouth Festival for the 12th time.

A graduate of Babson College, Wellesley MA, Culver pursued a career at Singer Sewing Machine Co. in New York City and retired in 1964. An avid supporter of the arts, Culver served as the Business Manager for the Norwalk Symphony from 1961 to 1986.

Not one to sit around, Culver was active in AARP and taught its Driver's Safety Class since its inception nearly 40 years ago. When he was in his 70s and 80s, he was a driver for the Meals on Wheels program in Roxbury and also served as the town's Municipal Agent for the Elderly and as an Alternate on the Planning & Zoning Commission.

He was born August 4, 1916, in Newton, MA, to the late Harold and Cornelia (L'Hommedieu) Griffin. Culver is survived by his wife Alice Griffin; his children Cynthia T. Griffin and her husband Joseph Altilio of Searsport, ME; James K. Griffin of Colico, Italy; Constance L. Cordova and her husband Lawrence Cordova of Bond, CO; Virginia G. Griffin and her husband Drew Waldman of Portland, OR; and Anne E. Griffin of Newark, OH. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Karen C.L. Anderson and her husband Timothy Anderson of New London, CT; William E. Lindsay and his wife Janice of Southbury, CT; Christopher Griffin of Atlanta, GA; Melissa Alvarez and her husband Dennis Alvarez of Hillsborough, NJ; Anna Griffin of Colico, Italy; and Matteo Griffin of Colico, Italy; and two great grandchildren, Chloe and Cade Griffin of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by three sisters, Natalie DeBlois of Chicago, IL; Barbara Hutchinson of Jacksonville, FL; and Elizabeth Parris of Barnstable, MA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean Scholz.
