IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Constance Joyce
Smith Jones
November 24, 1924 – January 29, 2016
Woodbury- Constance Joyce Smith Jones, 91, long time resident of Woodbury passed peacefully on Friday January 29, 2016 after a brief illness. She leaves a legacy of love and inspiration to those lucky enough to have known her. Connie was born on November 24, 1924, in Washington DC, to the late Dutee and Katherine Smith. At a young age her family moved to Sudbury MA where she attended the Ben W Murch School, later moving to Long Hill CT where she would meet and marry the love of her life, Kenneth William Jones. They were married on February 1, 1947 and set up housekeeping in Trumbull CT, moving to Woodbury with their five children in 1961. She received her Bachelors degree from UCONN after high school. During WWII she proudly served her country as a Private 1st Class in the USMCWR. During the 1970's she earned her Masters in Psychology from SCSU and her Real Estate broker's license, two careers that would carry her through much of the remainder of her life. She also attended Bridgeport University to study law in her late 50's. Connie had many careers during her long life beginning with that of Society Editor for the Trumbull Times in the 1950's. During the 60's and early 70's she wrote a book on phonetics and taught remedial reading at the Deveraux School in Washington CT as well as at Litchfield Prep and the Forman School in Litchfield CT. In 1970 she found her niche in the local real estate market founding Connie Jones Country Properties. Everyone remembers her signature signs in red, white and blue that simply stated "INTERESTED?" summing up her direct and in your face personality. During this time she did double duty utilizing her degree in psychology opening the Woodbury Counseling Center. She was a tireless and avid gardener, knitter and needle pointer. She dabbled in oil painting and stenciling, played the piano, the recorder and the autoharp. She loved art and music and constantly sang her own versions of popular tunes changing the words to some slightly irreverent version that her children still hear in their heads to this day. She was an avid collector of early American antiques and loved to scour thrift shops in search of bargains bargains bargains. She was a voracious reader and in her mid 80's decided to read every book ever awarded the Pulitzer prize, and she did. She was an active member of the Republican Town Committee and was elected to the Assessment Board of Appeals in her late 80's, continuing until the time of her death. More than anything she was the most energetic person anyone knew, still working, gardening and kicking butt at the bridge table at 91. Her joie de vivre was an inspiration to all that knew her. Connie was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth of 53 years and is survived by five children, sons Nick Jones and his wife Chris of Waldoboro ME, Curtis Jones and his wife Alice of Woodbury CT, Loring Jones and his partner Adrianna Hansen of Lake Arrowhead CA, Robin Jones and his husband Eddie Diaz of Bloomfield CT, a daughter, Lochlan Stuart and her husband Mark of Harris MN ; a brother Dutee Loring Smith and niece Dahlem Smith both of Saint Louis MO ; grandchildren Brook, Megan, Eric, Christian, Stephen, Abby, Kenzen, Stephanie, Michael and Jane; four great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relations too numerous to mention.
