Claire Stambler Tafler, 89, of The Watermark died on February 9th. She was born on October 10, 1922 in New York City, son of the late Benjamin and Jennie Stambler. Ms. Tafler started her career in the 1940s as a teacher of Home Economics in the New York City School System. In 1959, Ms. Tafler passed a competitive examination to become a Supervisor of Home Economics for the NYC Board of Education, with responsibility for schools in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. In the mid-1960s, Ms. Tafler passed an examination with the top score for promotion to Assistant Director of her division but declined the appointment in 1966 in order to maintain quality time with her family. She retired in 1978 after thirty-five years of service.. Previously living in Flushing, New York, Ms. Tafler and her husband moved to Southbury in 1985, where they became members of Temple B'nai Israel.

Ms. Tafler, beloved wife of the late Abraham, is survived by two sons, David I. Tafler of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Michael Philip Tafler and his wife Kitty Macey of Oswego, New York, two grandchildren Keagan and Katrina, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Beatrice Einstein and Muriel Spool.

She was buried in the Knollwood Section of the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Queens, New York.


Memorials: Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center in Waterbury, Connecticut, or to the American Cancer Society.
