Remember Christopher "Kit" Rogers "The Mayor of Woodbury"

Christopher "Kit/Chris" Carroll Rogers was born in New London, CT July 14th 1953 to Ann Marie "Amerie" and Orris "Buck" Rogers. The Rogers family moved from Noank to Woodbury in 1955. A lifelong resident of Litchfield County, Christopher passed away at home on February 4th 2022 in Roxbury, CT.

There will be a celebration of Christopher's life when we can safely gather outdoors in Spring/Summer '22. The time and place will be announced here at a later date.

Christopher is survived by his Aunt, Clare Durkin Burke (Richard), his siblings Mark Rogers (Jennifer), Guy Rogers (Nancy Thompson), Sara Rogers (Brooks Nelson), his nieces/nephews Kirk, Katherine, & Madeline Rogers, Hugh & Finn Nelson, and his cousins Erin Burke, Maureen Durkin McCormick & Carol Durkin Trinker.

While attending Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury, Christopher established a local reputation as a fierce competitor, a gifted athlete, a supportive friend, and a teammate. At Nonnewaug, he played varsity baseball, basketball, and soccer. During his junior and senior years Christopher was named to the Berkshire League All-Star Soccer team. Over Summer breaks he was a Lifeguard at Scott pools and competed as a 1-meter board diver and swimmer in local competitions.

During these years Christopher was also a member of the choir at St. Teresa's Church in Woodbury, and worked part time for many years after school, and weekends at Mr. Martin's Grocery store on Main St.

Christopher enlisted into the Connecticut Army National Guard in August of 1971. In 1971 Christopher was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for training, was awarded a sharpshooter badge with rifle bar, and graduated with the military occupation of 12B (Combat Engineer). Christopher was assigned to the 242nd Engineer Battalion in Stratford, CT where he served 6 years as a combat engineer. His battalion was called for service in many local emergencies, including the severe ice storm in 1973. Christopher retired from the military as a Sergeant.

While serving in the National Guard, Christopher attended Mitchell and Post Colleges, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Business, and played soccer for both colleges' teams. In the summers during the 1970s Christopher volunteered as a lighting and scenic tech at the Southbury Playhouse and the Dramalites Theater in Washington, CT. One summer Christopher was coaxed from backstage, to play the charming "bad-boy" romantic lead, Sky Masterson in the musical Guys and Dolls.

Christopher traveled throughout New England for decades working in advertising and sales for construction and contracting businesses, and in later years many local retailers in Woodbury and Southbury, all the while pursuing his love of sports. Christopher coached middle school soccer in Woodbury, played for local soccer teams, was a Safety Patrolman at Woodbury Ski & Racquet, was a "broom ball" enthusiast, and, most notably for more than 2 decades, played softball for various local teams which qualified to compete in both state and national tournaments, winning the CT State championship during the 80s.

Christopher was also an active member of the Woodbury Lion's club. He was happy and grateful for the opportunity to help fund young people seeking higher education. From the Car-Show to the Duck Race, to his beloved Haunted Hayrides, Kit threw himself into every Lion's Club Sponsored event with 110% of his efforts and abilities. Woe to you if you did not have five dollars on hand and you met Christopher on the street in the weeks before the Duck Race!

Christopher was extremely proud of "where he came from"; his Scots-Irish ancestry, his family, and his hometown, Woodbury. He had the gift of making friends easily, loved to share funny or poignant stories, and was always ready to listen and to help. Christopher held his friendships above all other considerations in life, and in return he became a "member" of many families in Woodbury. Those of us lucky enough to have known him and to have counted upon him as a friend and brother will carry a special love for him in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
