Obituary

Charles H. Hunt died peacefully at the Pomperaug Woods Health Center in Southbury on March 16. He was 100 years old.
He was born in White Plains, NY, son of Benjamin L. and Fannie McDowell Hunt.
He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1932 with a B.S. in Engineering and joined
his father's antique Oriental rug business, Starbuck & Hunt, in New York City. In 1940
he married Mildred Schermerhorn who preceded him in death in 2005. He served
in the Army in WWII and rejoined Starbuck & Hunt and assumed full responsibility for
the firm from 1950 until 1964. He later served in the accounting department of Yale and
Towne Lock Company until he retired in 1973.
In 1975 he and Mildred moved from White Plains to Woodbury where they become
active volunteers in the community. They moved into Pomperaug Woods, Southbury
soon after that community opened.
He was preceded in death by his brother Lawrence and sister, Katherine Hunt Bennett.
He is survived by his son, Roger (Mary) of Bloomington, IL; daughter, Carol (Anthony) Kearney of Glen Ridge, NJ; grandchildren: Christina (Ronald) Markle of Deerfield, IL.,
David Hunt (Kevin George) of Oakland, CA, Amanda Kearney of Glen Ridge, NJ, and
great-grand children: Emily and Ashley Markle of Deerfield, IL.
Charlie had a lifelong hobby of making and flying kites. His custom made kites were in
demand and he was known in the community for his exhibits and lectures on the history
of kite flying and building. Charlie was also active in the Heritage Village Ice Skating
Club, Senior Citizen Bowling, the Woodbury Historical Society and the North
Congregational Church Men's Fellowship Group.
He will be remembered for friendly smile, quick wit, his willingness to help others, and
the sparkle that remained in his eyes for 100 years.

Location: Munson-Lovetere Southbury

Services: Burial is planned for Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y. A memorial service will be held at Pomperaug Woods, 80 Heritage Road, Southbury at 1: 30 pm on Sunday, March 22 followed by a reception.

Visitation: There are no calling hours.
