IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Caroline Mead
Briggs
November 5, 1926 – April 9, 2013
SOUTHBURY- Caroline Mead Briggs died April 9, 2013 at home with her family. She was born November 5, 1926 in Winsted, CT to Rachel Pendleton Mead and Harold Eugene Mead. She leaves her high school sweetheart, lifelong friend and beloved husband, Donald A. Briggs. A graduate of The Gilbert School, she attended Middlebury College, worked for Life Magazine in New York and married in 1947. The family moved from Winsted to North Haven, CT, following the great flood of 1955. With her three children in school, Caroline enrolled in Southern Connecticut State College and earned her teaching degree. She taught fifth grade in North Haven until multiple sclerosis caused her early retirement. In 1972 she and Don moved to Southbury, among the first to live in Heritage Village. Caroline enjoyed the arts, subscribed to Long Wharf Theater and the Waterbury Symphony, and traveled to New York for its museums and theaters. She mastered needlework and filled her home with inspired creativity. She loved words and made daily entries in her journal, wrote weekly to family, and maintained a postcard correspondence with her nephew, Kimble Mead. In her later years she knitted prayer shawls to comfort others in need. She never complained about her limitations and had unwavering faith. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Woodbury. Mourning her loss with Don, are her children, Bonnie (Paul) Sargent, Rachel (Thomas) Ardito and William (Michele) Briggs, and her grands Marjorie, Madelyn and Charles Ardito, Andrew (Christi) Sargent, and Caroline and Mimi Briggs. The family is grateful for the loving caregivers especially Marion, Heather and Niomie.
