Bernard Roth, 90, died Sunday, March 30th, peacefully in hospice at Danbury Hospital. He lived at the Watermark at East Hill in Southbury. He was the loving husband of Phyllis Jean Roth for 69 years. He was born on May 2, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY and then moved to Malden, MA and graduated from Malden High School. He served in the US Navy as a 1st Class Firecontrolman on the destroyer escort USS Walter S. Brown. His ship defended American soldiers as they crossed the Atlantic in troop ships on their way to fight in WWII. He also aimed anti-aircraft guns during battles in the Mediterranean. He was in Naples during the liberation of Italy from the Nazis. After the war, he studied electrical engineering at Franklin Technical Institute in Boston, and he had a long career at Mosler Safe Company in Boston, and then in Danbury. He designed and installed large complex security systems for many large banks including international banks and federal banks. After Mosler he was night manager at the Harrison Inn in Southbury, which is now the Heritage. He volunteered for the safety committee and the audit committee while he and Phyllis lived in Heritage Village. At the Watermark he served on the dining committee. He loved the Red Sox and Patriots. Besides his wife of 69 years, Phyllis, he also leaves his daughter Pam and son Eric, grandson Brent, granddaughters Madeline and Charlotte, and great grandsons Walker and Kade, as well as several nieces and nephews.
